Bloomington, Ind.–At Griffy Lake Nature Preserve, the white and pink spring beauty flowers pop out from crumbling fall leaves. Since a spring controlled burn took place, part of the woodland understory is black, without any blossoms. But soon, the black gives way to an area with flowers, including the trout lily. While waiting for the the trees to leaf out, it’s a wonderful treasure hunt on a sunny spring day.
