Indiana wildflowers spring forth

Spring Beauty

McCormick’s Creek State Park, Spencer, Indiana–It’s only April 2, but the early spring beauties and bloodroot blooms already poke up through the leaf litter on McCormick’s Creek State Park trails. Purple and white speckled flowers, the leaves and white mayapple flowers, tiny pups yet, dot the trailsides. Though the day promises nearly 50 degree temperatures, nary a soul passes us on a Tuesday midmorning. No one expects the flowers this soon, and yet, here they are to greet us.
If you’re planning a trip to southern Indiana parks to see the wildflowers, the next two weeks will be crucial. Spring has sprung a bit early this year. Wildflower weekend guided hikes are offered in the parks the weekend of April 13, but if you want to explore on your own, now is the time.
